"The Cyprian" December 7th 1881 Gwalia re Cyprian. A weekly Newspaper for the service of every class of the
Welsh people. At Pwllheli Magistrates court on Wednesday, before Mr
Lloyd Edwards and the other magistrates a number of cases were brought before
them of stealing goods from the cargo of the ship Cyprian. Mr Pritchard (Messers Hughes & Pritchard) Bangor
brought about the prosecution on behalf of the Board of Trade. Richard Williams and Owen Jones, two farmers living in
Llaniestyn were each fined £10 plus costs. The defendants had given false names and Williams
threatened a policeman with a piece of wood. Griffith Parry, a farm labourer was also accused, but no
evidence was found and the charge was dismissed. Catherine Williams and Anne Hughes Edern were each fined
10/-. Anne Hughes, a child, was released on payment and costs. Mr Edwards said that he had received a threatening letter in regards to this case, but said that he had acted upon it in the manner in which was appropriate to a letter of this nature. He said he had not felt in anyway threatened and dealt with the case according to his duty. If other similar cases were brought before the magistrates in the future, then they would not hesitate to send them before the assizes to stand trial. List of those that were fined at
