February

Monday 1 – Half at Congol repairing the stall for the horse. BW money 13/6d. Sleeping at Tan Ffordd this evening. Talafon is sick.

Tuesday 2 – BW 2 and 6.

Wednesday 3 – Catherine Jones Refail’s funeral, she lived in Mynytho recently. BW 10pm to 2 am.

Thursday 4 – BW 6pm to 10.

Friday 5 – Drill in the evening 5.20 pm, 5/-.

Saturday 6 – At the Rocket House cleaning the gear after the drill. Went to Rhoshirwaun to buy shoes for Isaac and Edgar Morris.

Sunday 7 – Joseff Jones at 2. BW 2 pm to 6.

Monday 8 – BW 6 am to 10. Rain from the east.

Tuesday 9 – BW 5 am to 10.

Wednesday 10 – BW 5 am to 9. Went to Porth Llawenan to fetch grit for the hens. Sheepdog trials, committee at Ty Capel.

Friday 12 – Frost and ice this morning, wind and rain in the afternoon.

Saturday 13 – BW 12 to 4 am. Paid for 2 cwt and a small bag of feed for the hens 16/-. Cwt for the hens today.

Sunday 14 – Hugh Rhiw at 2 and 6. BW 4 to 8. With Daniel the dun cow has a calf at 11.30pm.

Monday 15 – BW 12 to 4 am. Rain and mist. BW 8 pm to 12.

Tuesday 16 – BW pay £2.0/6d. BW 8 pm to 12.

Wednesday 17 – Hugh Griffith Sarn Fawr’s funeral. BW 4 pm to 8.

Thursday 18 – Rain in the morning.

Saturday 20 – BW 6. 30 to 10.30. Edgar Morris and I go to Llanbedrog to see Hugh Newport, then on to town.

Sunday 21 – WJ Jones the minister at 2.30.

Monday 22 -  BW 2.30 to 6.30 am. Rain through the night. At Tan Ffordd. Ann starts at Talalfon, Elin has gone home.

Tuesday 23 – BW 2. 30 to 6.30 am. Hugh Hughes, Newport, my brother in law dies at Llanbedrog.

Wednesday 24 – Rain from the east. BW 9 pm to 1 am.

Thursday 25 – Wind from the east, rain, wind shifts to the west mid day then heavy rain. BW 5 to 9 pm.

Friday 26 – BW 1 pm to 5. Lamb at Tan Ffordd.

Saturday 27 – BW 5 am to 9. Rain in the morning. Hugh Hughes Newport’s funeral. Snow this evening. Received £13/11/6d for two months BW.

Sunday 28 – Snow and cold winds. Strong gales last night brings down the telephone, sheds and trees.

Monday 1 – BW 1 am to 5. Put corrugated iron on the aisle at Rhiwlas, the wind had blown it off. BW 9 pm to 1 am.

Saturday 6 – At Pwll Melyn repairing the cowshed roof. D Rowlands has gone to Thomas Williams Bethesda’s funeral. County Council election Evans, Madryn loses.

Sunday 7 -BW 9 m to 1 am. Snow.

Monday 8 – At Tan Ffordd.

Tuesday 9 – Cold, harsh weather.

Wednesday 10 – Eggs at market 1d each, butter 1/5d per lb.

Thursday 1 – Planted the garden at Tan Ffordd.

Friday 2 – BW 4 am to 8. Rain from the east. Put the eggs from Ael Bryn under the hen at Tan Ffordd.

Saturday 3 – Finished digging the big patch at Ael Bryn.

Sunday 4 – Hopwood at 2.

Monday 5 – 11 am to 7 pm at Cadwgan furrowing the garden and planting onions. The Air Force start today (at Penrhos)

Tuesday 6 – Eggs under the hen 6 from Ael Bryn. Money for watchers drill and measuring the ropes £1/0/6d. BW 9 pm to 1 am.

Wednesday 7 – BW 1 pm to 5.

Thursday 8 – BW 9am to 1 pm.

Friday 9 – BW 1 am to 5. W J Thomas stops his watch at 9 and Daniel starts his then. Herwyn Rees, Eifion hurts himself with his bike. BW 11 pm to 3 am.

Saturday 10 – Half at Congol repairing the barn. Took the cow to Meillionydd to the Bull.

Sunday 11 – The minister at 2 and 6.

Monday 12 – Spent the day at Cadwgan finishing the garden.

Tuesday 13 – At Cadwgan picking the potatoes.

Wednesday 14 – Went to town today to get my age (?).

Thursday 15 – At Cadwgan putting manure on the potatoes in cae pant. News that Griffith y Ffor has died at Llanaelhaearn, he was the last from Rhiw to see poor Isaac alive in 1921.

Friday 16 – BW 4 am to 8. At Bwlchgarreg repairing in the loft.

Saturday 17 –  BW 4 am to 8. LSA drill 5/-. Poor Dick dies at 10pm, he’s 42 years old (eldest son)

Sunday 18 –

Monday 19 – Went to the doctor’s to Abersoch but couldn’t get a death certificate as Dr Evans wasn’t home.

Tuesday 20 – Spoke with Thomas Berch from the post office.

Wednesday 21 – Went to town to see the coroner. Paid £3/7/6d for the seston.

Thursday 22 – Went to Refail Bach to pay for the coffin £6/17/0d. Spoke with Thomas Berch from the post told him that the funeral was tomorrow.

Friday 23 – Poor Dick’s funeral at Nebo. It’s a fine day.

Saturday 24 – Finished planting the garden at Tan Ffordd. Furrowed the big patch at Ael Bryn in the afternoon. Paid for the grave and the burial £3/5/0d.

Sunday 25 – Hughes Rhiw at 2.

Monday 26 – Sent for an explanation (of the bible) for Hughes. With Daniel in the Rocket House. Went to Llwynfor to fetch a load of manure.

Tuesday 27 – Six Ael Bryn eggs should hatch today. Half at Bwlchgarreg. BW 3 pm to 7, the first watch since I buried poor Dick.

Wednesday 28 – Day at Bwlchgarreg.

Thursday 29 – At Penarfynydd sowing the barn field, 2/6d paid.

Friday 30 – Day at Bwlchgarreg. Paid for 2 cwt corn one I got today and the other I had earlier.

May

Saturday 1 – At Penarfynydd sowing half the field next to Pwllmadog.

Sunday 2 – E O Lloyd Porthmadog.

Monday 3 – Finished the planting at Ael Bryn. Have been with Evan Williams Tyn Gamfa taking the diesel engine at Erw apart.

Tuesday 4 – The motor (lorry) from Talafon comes to fetch the diesel engine from Erw to take it to Tyn Gamfa. Half in Bwlchgarreg in the morning and then I went to Pwllmelyn to spread potatoe manure.

Wednesday 5 – BW 6 am to 10.

Thursday 6 – Went to fetch a bowl of oats from Ty Croes Bach 3/-. Ploughing at Tan Ffordd in the afternoon.

Friday 7 – BW 6 am to 10.

Saturday 8 – Went to Bryn Teg at 4 pm. Planted potatoes in cae pant Penarfynydd.

Sunday 9 – Home today my eye is bad.

Monday 10 – Sowing barley in cae pwllfadog and the bottom end of cae pant. Had 5/- from Robert Evans.

Tuesday 11 – Day at Ty Ucha for Mrs Keatings, received £3/6/0d from Mrs Keating, she paid today. Rain from the N E.

Wednesday 12 – BW 4 am to 8. The king’s coronation. Watch pay £1/0/6d. Planted potatoes at Gimla.

Thursday 13 – At the fair today. Paid 10/- in Pwlldefaid Shop for poor Dick.

Saturday 15 – Watchers drill at 2.

Sunday 16 – Hopwood at 2 and 6. 11/4d towards the children going to the Singing Festival. RHT and Laura are here.

Monday 17 – At Pisgah making a hen coop.

Tuesday 18 – Day at Bwlchgarreg. Paid 8/6d for a cwt of corn and paid for one that poor Dick had bought.

Wednesday 19 – At Pwllheli today, went to see Thomas Berch. It rained this evening.

Thursday 20 – At Ty Croes repairing the barn roof. Pound of butter 1/3d. RHT brings a load of timber from Pen y Berth £1/10/0d.

Friday 21 – At Cadwgan cementing the house.

Saturday 22 – At Cadwgan for a while in the morning, then it rained so I went home to do the floor in the parlour.

Sunday 23 – W J the minister at 10.

Monday 24 – Finished the parlour floor at Ael Bryn. BW 6 to 10 pm.

Tuesday 25 – BW 10 am to 2 pm.

Wednesday 26 – Put netting wire on the wall at the back of the house.

Thursday 27 – At Cadwgan finishing with the cement, received a £1 for the work. Two hens to hatch.

Friday 28 – BW 3 to 8 am. Painted Pisgah chapel ceiling with emulsion. Sold five lambs and two yearlings to Evan J Williams, Edern for nine guineas.

Saturday 29 – Half at Tyddyn Morthwyl. Bucketful of cement and paid 8/6d for corn for the hens.

Sunday 30 – Thomas Ellis Pwllheli at 2 and 6.

Monday 31 – Put an oven in at Rhiwlas. John Talafon comes to fetch the lambs. Paid 12/- for bringing the seston, the cement and taking the lambs.

June.

Tuesday 1 – Day at Tyddyn Meirion with the pump.

Wednesday 2 – Half a day with the pump.

Thursday 3 – Singing Festival at Aberdaron. Rain. The butcher at Edern shoots himself.

Friday 4 – Mist and rain. BW 2 am to 6. The fox kills the hens at Congol.

Saturday 5 – BW 2 to 6 am. Put the eggs from Ael Bryn under the hen at Tan Ffordd. BW 10 pm to 2 am.

Sunday 6 – Sunday school meeting at Tan y Foel, R Jones is in the meeting. Mist and rain. BW 10 am to 2 pm.

Monday 7 – BW 2 to 6 am. Watch pay 13/6d. Paid £1/5/0d John Talafon for half ton of coal.

Tuesday 8 – BW 8 am to 12. Received an insurance card from Cardiff.

Wednesday 9 – BW 4 to 8 am. At Rhiwlas working on the kitchen.

Thursday 10 – It’s my 65th birthday and my first pension. Pointing the roof at Ty Ucha for the Keatings from 11 to 6.

Friday 11 – Put a grate in at Seaview.

Saturday 12 – Washed the sheep at tan Ffordd.

Sunday 13 – Bob Humphreys at 2 and 6.

Monday 14 – The fox is back. Shearing at Tan Ffordd. Paid 17/- for 2 cwt of split corn.

Tuesday 15 – At Ty Ucha from 11 to 7.

Wednesday 16 – Put a door in the kitchen at Cadwgan 4/-. Nell goes to town.

Thursday 17 – Put emulsion in Ael Bryn.

Friday 18 – Cut hay at Ty Ucha with EW Williams 2/6d.

Saturday 19 – Finishing the roof at Ty Ucha from 12 to 7.

Sunday 20 – Hugh Rhiw at 2 and 6.

Monday 21 – The children go for a trip to Colwyn Bay and Llanduduno. Watch pay £1/11/6d

Tuesday 22 – At Congol pointing the cowshed roof from 9 until 6. Received 1/6d for the door from Willie Eifion.

Wednesday 23 – At Ty Croes Bach painting the parlour. 2 cwt corn for the hens 17/-.

Thursday 24 – Went to the quarterly meeting at Cricieth. Pension £1.

Friday 25 – At Penarfynydd putting two teeth on the dragging rake (?). Home in the afternoon clearing the garden.

Saturday 26 – Carrying hay at Rhiwlas in the field in front of Eifion and the small pasture at Penboncyn.

Sunday 27 –Joseff Jones at 2.

Monday 28 – Half at Rhiwlas, cutting the hay in the garden of Penboncyn for Daniel Rowlands. Started my watch at 2 pm.

Tuesday 29 – BW 2 am to 6. Day at Rhiwlas carrying hay in Penboncyn and Bwlchgarreg. BW 6 pm to 10.

Wednesday 30 – Rain in the morning then misty.

July.

Thursday 1 – Half at Rhiwlas raking hay at Penboncyn, then papering at Rhiwlas. Watch money 9/-.

Saturday 3 – Painting the windows at home. Kate, Thomas Bwth’s daughter from the South is here.

Thursday 5 – Went to Llithfaen. Mrs Mills goes away.

Friday 6 – Watchers drill. It’s foggy these days.

Saturday 7 – Had 6/- for putting up the guttering at Eifion and paid 16/- for 2 cwt corn for the hens.

Sunday 8 – Hughes at 2.

Monday 9 – Received 6/6d for the work I did with the pump at Tyddyn Meirion.

Tuesday 10 – Sheepdog Trials at Bodwyddog. Richard Owen Waen dies in Liverpool.

Saturday 14 – The Band goes away (?) £2/15/3d fro Daniel for watch keeping and for working for him. Lewis and Mills two lads from Manchester come to stay at Ael Bryn.

Wednesday 22 – BW 6 am to 10. Daniel is in bed sick. Thrashing at Tyn Fron. Paid 3/6d to Ianto for putting soles on Isaac’s boots.

Thursday 23 – Raked the barley at Congol. I slept at Rhiwlas this evening.

Friday 24 – BW 8 am to 12. Fog and rain today.

Saturday 25 – BW 12 to 4 am. Fine day today.

Monday 27 – RHT send word to the Post asking me to go to Bangor to see to Thomas who has broken his arm.

Tuesday 28  – I get ready to go to Bangor, but RHT doesn’t come to fetch me as they have had word that they need to be there early. I got £13 for the diesel engine.

Friday 3 – BW 6 am to 10. Went to down to Congol to get some hay in. BW 10 ;pm to 2 am.

Saturday 4 – News comes that Elin, Charles who lives in Denbigh has died. BW 2 pm to 6.

Sunday 5 – BW 6 pm to 10.

Monday 6 – Paid for 9 cwt of coal £1/2/6d. Nell goes to Ty Brics, so she can go to Elin’s funeral in Denbigh.

Tuesday 7 – BW 9.30 to 1.30 pm. Hard ice this morning.

Wednesday 8 – Isaac, Bryn Gwynt dies this afternoon at Pisgah House.

Thursday 9 – Collected the hospital fund money £1/4/0d. Paid 2/6d for the seat. Watch pay £2/14/0d.

Friday 10 – Rain.

Saturday 11 – BW 3 am to 7. There’s been a terrible rail accident in Scotland on the line from Dundee to Glasgow, snow had bought the train to a halt and the express train ploughed into it, 24 have died.

Sunday 12 – Jones Cricieth.

Monday 13 – BW 6 am to 10. Heavy rain this morning.

Tuesday 14 – BW 2 am to 6. At Tyn Gamfa filling round the straps of the diesel engine. BW 10 pm to 2 am.

Wednesday 15 – BW 6 am to 10.

Thursday 16 -  BW 2 pm to 6. The yearling ewe takes the ram.

Friday 17 – BW 6 am to 10.

Monday 20 – BW 12 to 4 am.

Tuesday 21 – BW 8 pm to 12.

Wednesday 22 – Eggs for the siop 4/7d. Daniel Rowlands has gone to town. Paid £1/10/0d for corn for the hens. BW 8 pm to 12.

Thursday 23 -  Had a letter from John Williams, America. Watch pay £1/7/0d.

Friday 24 – BW 12 to 4 am. Went to Abererch to see Thomas. BW 8 pm to 12.

Sunday 26 – Joseff Jones at 2 and 6.

Monday 27 – Sent for the monthly books.

Tuesday 28 – Robert Williams Tyn Llidiart’s funeral today.

Wednesday 29 – 30 –

Friday 31 – Received the monthly books and the diaries today. Dug the lower patch in the garden at Ael Bryn. Cwt of corn for the hens here and at Tan Ffordd.
