January

Tuesday 1 – Cold freezing weather.

Wednesday 2 – Freezing. Had a letter from Eliza in Clun.

Thursday 3 – Freezing. With Owen sharpening the blades of the mill.

Friday 4 – With Owen finishing with the mill. Freezing hard. Sent a letter to Eliza.

Saturday 5 – At Pwllmelyn moving the gorse mill.

Sunday 6 – John Elias Pwllheli at 2 and 6.

Monday 7 – Had a letter from Nell to say that her mother was ill with the rheumatics. RHT sends her a bottle of medicine from Botwnnog.

Tuesday 8 – At Pwllmelyn in the afternoon taking down the wood that held the spindle of the crushing mill. Went to Nebo at 7 to listen to Reidol Roberts.

Wednesday 9 – Had a letter wanting me to go to Clun. Started off from Port.

Thursday 10 – Started my journey with the first train from Port. Arrived at Birches at 4 pm.

Friday 11 – Eliza is no better. Sent a letter to RHT.

Saturday 12 – Cold icy.

Sunday 13 – Miserable Sunday.

Monday 14 – Sent a letter to Carreg Lefain and Jinni Pisgah.

Tuesday 15 – Sent a letter to Bob and Tedi.

Wednesday 16 – Postcard from RHT to say that he’s going to Aberystwyth.

Thursday 17 – Very cold today. Eliza is poorly today severe pain in her right arm.

Friday 18 – Sent a letter to Ann Port and one to Tedi at Ael y Bryn. Eliza’s left hand is painful today.

Saturday 19 – Both hands are painful today, am up until 2 am with Eliza.

Sunday 20 – Miserable Sunday. Eliza’s back is bad today.

Monday 21 – Had a letter from Jinni Pisgah.

Tuesday 22 – Had a letter from RHT from Pwllheli. Eliza is better today. Sent RHT a letter.

Wednesday  23 –

Thursday 24 – Sent Jinni Pisgah a letter and a photograph of Dick and …. (?) Sent a letter to Carreg Lefain.

Friday 25 – Had a letter from Tedi telling me about the lamp that went on fire in Pisgah Chapel.

Saturday 26 – Eliza gets up for a little today.

Sunday 27 – Cold today snowing. Miserable Sunday.

Monday 28 – Eliza gets up.

Tuesday 29 – I’ve no tobacco today. Had a letter from Jinni Pisgah telling me about the LSA drills.

Wednesday 30 – Sent a letter to Brynfran.

Thursday 31 – Received ‘The Herald’ and an ounce of tobacco from Tan y Ffordd.

 

February

Friday 1 – Sent Tedi a letter to ask him to take my insurance card to Terfyn.

Saturday 2 – Heavy rain today. Eliza is much better.

Sunday 3 – Last night Eliza suffered severe pain in her left arm, it was nothing like the pain in the right arm, she really isn’t well today and feels very miserable.

Monday 4 – Mild weather.

Tuesday 5 – Had a letter from RHT to say that his partner had been injured. Sent a letter to Carreg Lefain and Tan y Ffordd.

Wednesday 6 –Fine day. Eliza isn’t well. Reg goes to Row to find room for the cattle.

Thursday 7 – Eliza is better today her right arm isn’t as painful. Went to Clun in the morning.

Friday 8 – Eliza is better.

Saturday 9 – The pain has gone. Reg goes to Carno to view a farm known as Cennig, not a good place it’s very wet.

Sunday 10 – Eliza has no pain this Sunday. It’s a fine day but its miserable being here.

Monday 11 – Had a letter from William Ty Croes. Heavy snow today. Eliza gets up today.

Tuesday 12 –  Cold with snow today. Sent a letter to Llawenan. Eliza gets up again today.

Wednesday 13 – Had a letter from Tan y Ffordd. Cold icy day. Sent a letter to Tan y Ffordd.

Thursday 14 – Cold day hard ice. There’s no end to the snow. Eliza comes downstairs today.

Friday 15 – Very cold snowing.

Saturday 16 – Had a letter from Tedi Ael y Bryn to say that there’s a lot of snow in Rhiw and the motors have been buried under it, no one has ever seen so much snow before.

Sunday 17 – Cold day the snow is still around.

Monday 18 – Cold day the snow remains the same and there’s heavy snow in Rhiw.

Tuesday 19 – Had a letter from Tedi and Jinni Pisgah to say that Mary Ty Croes bach was buried today twelve men had to clear the road to take her to St Aelrhiw’s church.

Wednesday 20 – Cold day but a thaw is setting in.

Thursday 21 -  Slow thaw today. Reg goes to Colsty to fetch a load of hay.

Friday 22 – My shirts arrived from Rhiw.

Saturday 23 – Mild day a good thaw. Reg slaughters a pig for Lysyard.

Sunday Monday -  24 to 25 –

Tuesday 26 – It’s snowing today. Eliza is in bed again.

Wednesday 27 – Eliza has a chesty cough.

Thursday 28 – Had a letter from Ann Port.

 

March.

Friday 1 – Eliza gets up to sit by the fire in the bedroom.

Saturday 2 – The pain has returned to her left arm, both are bad this evening. I go to the shop in Clun and send a letter to Richard at Tan y Ffordd. It’s a miserable evening and there are no prospects of chapel tomorrow.

Sunday 3 – Miserable Sunday. Eliza is in bed rheumatics in both hands. Sent a letter to Port.

Monday 4 -  Reg goes to the doctors to fetch Eliza a bottle of medicine.

Tuesday 5 – I was up all night, Eliza was coughing all the time. Had a letter from RHT. Reg and I go to fetch a load of wood.

Wednesday 6 –

Thursday 7 – Sent a letter to RHT. I go to Clun.

Friday 8 – Eliza is in bed rheumatism in her left leg.

Saturday 9 – Received the Herald and tobacco from Tan y Ffordd.

Sunday 10 – Fine Sunday, but really miserable as things stand. Eliza is in bed.

Monday 11 –

Tuesday 12 – Sent a letter to Tedi and one to Tan y Ffordd to say that we are coming home on Friday.

Wednesday 13 – Fine day.

Thursday 14 – Fine day. Eliza gets up. Reg goes for a load of hay to Colsty.

Friday 15 – Went to Colsty and Clun. Sent a letter to RHT.

Saturday 16 – Miserable Saturday evening, Eliza has pain in her left leg. The lady from Brynfran was buried today.

Sunday 17 – Eliza is in bed severe pain in her legs. It’s really depressing.

Monday 18 – Her leg is still bad today.

Tuesday 19 – Eliza can’t even sit up in bed today, but she’s a little better by the afternoon.

Wednesday 20 – Had a letter from Tedi to say that the lady from Brynfran was buried on Saturday.

Thursday 21 – Rain all day today.

Friday 22 –

Saturday 23 – Went to Colsty.

Sunday 24 – Eliza is much better today, but stays in bed.

Monday 25 – Warm weather.

Tuesday 26 – Had a letter from RHT and one from Tan y Ffordd. Went to Clun to find a motor to take us to Montgomery tomorrow.

Wednesday 27 – Near Byrlo waiting for the bread van it’s a warm morning. Came home from Clun.

Thursday 28 -  Furrowing the early potatoes.

Friday 29 – Planting potatoes. Its very warm, have taken my shirt off.

Saturday 30 – Finished planting the early potatoes. Exceptionally warm weather.

April.

Monday 1 - 

Tuesday 2 – Sent the money £1 for the monthly books.

Wednesday 3 – Went to town today with John Tyn Ffos. Griffith Brynawel is taken to Bangor (hospital).

Thursday 4 – Rain today. Griffith Brynawel dies at Bangor.

Friday 5 –

Saturday 6 – Ismael goes to Bangor to fetch Griffith Brynawel’s body.

Sunday 7 –

Monday 8 – Cold weather.

Tuesday 9 – Griffith Brynawel’s funeral. Cold day.

Wednesday 10 – Cold morning wind from the east. Muck spreading the potatoes in the hovel field at Tan y Ffordd.

Thursday 11 – Planted 24 rows. Had a letter from Nell. Cold wind north wind.

Friday 12 – It froze last night. Finished the planting at Tan y Ffordd.

Saturday 13 –

Sunday 14 – Ellis O Lloyd Portmadoc. Laura Pen Bryn Bach and her husband call.

Monday 15 – Sent a letter to Nell. Cold wind from the east.

Tuesday 16 – Went to Penbwlch to fetch hay.

Wednesday 17 – Some rain, misty the wind is down today.

Thursday 18 – Misty and wet.

Friday 19 – Fine day.

Saturday 20 – Rolling the chapel field and the hovel field at Tan y Ffordd. Cold wind again.

Sunday 21 – James Elder at 2 and 6.

Monday 22 – At Ty Ruttan. Some rain today.

Tuesday 23 – Cold today.

Wednesday 24 – Cold and freezing this morning. LSA drill in the afternoon.

Thursday 25 – Cold again today. The wind is down this afternoon.

Friday 26 – It rained a little last night there’s a cold north wind. Rain in the evening.

Saturday 27 -  The wind changes direction and its warmer.

Sunday 28 – George E Williams Clynnog at 10. It rained well last night, it’s raining again this evening.

Monday 29 – At Pen r Ogo repairing the door. It’s cold again today.

Tuesday 30 -  Eliza is poorly today she has severe pain in her leg. It’s a cold day.

Thursday 23 -  At Bytilith from 10 last night to  2 am. Rain.

Friday 24 – At Tyn Castell. Sent a letter to Clun.

Saturday 25 – At Tyn Castell.

Sunday 26 – Tecwyn Jones Talysarn.

June.

Saturday 1 – At Tyn Castell. Bad weather watch 12 – 4am.

Sunday 2 – Joseff Jones at 2 and 6.

Monday 3 – Bad weather watch 4- 8am. 9/- from Daniel. Half a day at Tyn Castell.

Tuesday 4 – Day at Tyn Castell.

Wednesday 5 – Half day at Tyn Castell rain in the afternoon. Letter from Clun.

Thursday 6 – Three quarters at Tyn Castell until 2. Rain.

Friday 7 – Day at Tyn Castell. Richard the farm hand and his wife go to Caernarfon.

Saturday 8 – Day at Tyn Castell. Finished earthing the potatoes at Ael Bryn.

Sunday 9 -  Eliza isn’t well.

Monday 10 – My 57th birthday.

Tuesday 11 – Day at Tyn Castell. Dr Jones has to call.

Wednesday 12 – Home today as Eliza is not well and is in bed. Fine rain in the afternoon from the east.

Thursday 13 – Half at Tyn Castell. Went to Trip to render around the door.

Friday 14 – Started off for Trip but Owen Hughes comes to get me to go and see to Dick.

Saturday 15 – At Tan y Ffordd the doctor calls.

Sunday 16 – At Tan y Ffordd.

Monday 17 – Dick has to go to hospital.

Thursday 20 – Dipped the sheep and took the lambs to Meillionydd £6/15/0d

Saturday 6 – Carried two loads of hay from Cae Big and six loads from the field below the house.

Monday – Friday 8 to 12 – At Tan y Ffordd.

Saturday 13 – Had the bull to the brown cow.

Sunday 14 –

Monday 15 Bull to the dun cow.

Tuesday 16 – Carried hay in the chapel field.

Wednesday – Saturday 17 to 20 –

Sunday 21 – Joseff Jones at 2. GT Roberts Botwnnog at 6.

Monday 22 – Heavy rain.

Tuesday – Wednesday 23 to 24 –

Thursday 25 – 6/4d for the butter. Mowed the hay at Bryngoleu. Cwt of corn 3/- paid.

Friday 26 – Had a letter from Nell. Received 10/1d from Daniel for B W watch.

Saturday 27 – LSA practise. Carried hay at Bryngoleu. Hot afternoon. Paid W Owen 2/- for his help.

Sunday 28 – Rain today.

Monday 29 – B W watch 2 – 9am. Rain today. 5/7d from Daniel. Sent a letter to Nell.

Tuesday 30 – Cut the grass in the garden of Ty Isa. Paid R H Griffith 1/- for helping.

Wednesday 31 – B W watch 11 am – 4pm. Received 4/7d.

 

August

Thursday – Cwt of fine corn 13/-. Robert Roberts Argraig at Ael Bryn wanting me to sign for the 7/6d.

Friday 2 -  B W watch 11.30 – 4.30pm.

Saturday 3 -  RHT gets married, Nell was married eight years ago today.

Sunday 4 – Heavy rain. The water comes in the back door at Tan y Ffordd.

Monday 5 -  11/3d from Daniel. B W watch 1 to 5.

Tuesday 6 – Mist and rain today. Pulled weeds from the turnips. Sent my card to Sam Jones 25 stamps.

Wednesday 7 –  5/- for butter. Dipped the sheep.

Thursday 8 – Robert Hwmffra Griffith cuts the bracken and hay at Terfyn Isa.

Friday 9 – R H Griffith cuts bracken. B W watch 3 – 8 am.  The funeral of John William the carpenters son.

Saturday 10 – Went to Terfyn Isa to get the hay Rolant Griffith Tyddyn Morthwyl uses Penarfynydd’s cart. Humid misty day.

Sunday 11 – Ellis Lloyd Owen Portmadoc at 2 and 6.30.

Monday 12 – R H Griffith cuts the bracken. Had the record card back from Sam Jones.

Tuesday 13 – 5/7d from Daniel. At the August Fair having my teeth taken out.

Wednesday 14 – R H Griffith cuts the bracken. Had a letter from Nell. 3/8d for the butter. Dipping the sheep for the final time.

Thursday 15 – R H Griffith cuts the bracken.

Friday 16 – R H Griffith works half a day. Rain in the afternoon. Paid 13/6d for fine corn to Hughes.

Saturday 17 – B W watch 3 to 7 am. BW watch 6 to 10pm. Paid R h Griffith £1 for cutting the bracken.

Sunday 18 – Fine Sunday.

Monday 19 – Sheepdog Trials start at 5.

Tuesday 20 – Sheepdog trials start at 9 am. Rain at 3.

Wednesday 21 – Fine day but not drying much.

Thursday 22 – 5/6d for butter.

Friday 23 – BW watch 3 to 8 am. Foggy all day.

Saturday 24 – Heavy rain and fog this morning. 9/- from Daniel.

Sunday 25 – Rev James Elder at 2 and 6.30.

Monday 26 – R H Griffith comes in the afternoon to carry bracken three loads.

Tuesday 27 – R H Griffith gathers the bracken and carries one load. Rain in the afternoon. Paid £1 for dipping the sheep.

Wednesday 28 – R H Griffith picks the potatoes in the garden and finishes carrying the bracken three loads in the afternoon. B W watch 10pm to 3 am.

Thursday 29 – 5/- from Daniel. At Tyddyn Morthwyl doing repairs. B W watch 11pm to 5 am. 7/- for the butter.

Friday 30 – Started cutting the corn in the field nearest to Conion.

Tuesday 3 – At Tyn Castell. Richard is still with the corn.

Thursday 5 – Foggy again. At Tyn Castell.

Friday 6 – Richard Pwllmelyn finishes cutting the chapel field. It’s a hot day.

Wednesday 11 – Finished carrying the corn at Conion. Nell comes to stay.

Tuesday 22 – R H Griffith picks potatoes. Put two of the cows in tonight.

Wednesday 23 – R H Griffith finishes picking potatoes. B W watch 2 to 7pm.

Thursday 24 – Heavy rain today. The red bullock and the dun heifer go into the cowshed tonight, put the bullock where the pony usually goes.
