Maria Hughes |
At the
end of the nineteenth century and the begining of the twentieth, Maria
Hughes kept a shop known as Siop Newydd (New Shop). Nothing remains of the
original premises as the family later built a new shop over the road, which
kept the name. From the accounts, we can see that
the shop sold mainly beer, wines and spirits and could perhaps have been
Rhiw’s first and last Off Licence !!!. Here are a few examples from
the accounts book to show what your favourite tipple and groceries
cost circa 1911.
