Hi Tony,
Hope this finds you in good health.
Your website gets better and better every year. Guess you don't miss
the dive vessels any more-I've been based in Singapore since the
last time we met!

Fascinataing site! My father was Captain John Owen Jones who joined
Elder Dempster Lines in 1946 - dad was born in Treorchy in the
Rhondda, but he grew up in Walwyn's Castle, Pembrokeshire. He served
on some of the great names of post-war era including: Aureol,
Freetown, Mampong (He became master in 1965 when he was only 36),
Glenafric, Fourah Bay, Fulani, Eboe and Fourcados. Dad passed in
2004, but maintained his love for the years he spent with Elder
Dempsters and Blue Funnel as the best of his seagoing career. He
later worked with Captain Parri-Huws who was based in Hong Kong. Dad
actually wrote a very interesting account of his life at sea - which
we all treasure.

Hi I´m an old Swedish sailor from the Johnson Line era, and the only
ting I regret about Brazil is that I did not get any pictures in
1959/60 from Florida Bar in Rio!
Anyone who could help me?

Very enjoyable
my late father Captain Edward Stubbings was with Blue Funnel from
1935 until 1975 and the family still hold some memorabilia - he was
midshipman gunlayer on the Chilean Reefer when it got sunk by the
Gneisenau (rescued by HMS Rodney later) and served on many ships in
the fleet, until tiring of the move to containers. We still have his
logs

Hello Tony . I have come across a old wooden coat hanger with blue
funnel line on it and can't think how it came to me. I read your web
site with interest and the only connection I can possibly have is my
step father who was a merchant navy man. Just wondering if you have
come across a ships engineer called Jim Dalkin who has sadly passed
away some years ago?
I would be interested to hear any information you may have. Thanks.

Came across your site and I was amazed to find a photo of my
Grandfather (David Hughes, Carpenter, Nefyn) I left my home in Nefyn
in 1955 but even though I am 62 now I is still think of Nefyn as
home. It was always my intention to end my days in my family
house,Uwch yr Ffynnon where David Hughes was brought up but sadly
the house has now left the family. I have wonderful fond memories of
the first 5 years of my life being brought up in both Nefyn and
Morfa Nefyn. I came back regularly while my Grandmother was still
alive in Rhandir Villa Morfa and my two aunts in Nefyn, Nelly Hughes
& Kath Bently. Living in South Wales my Welsh is very poor now (as
they speak a strange version of it here) but when a "Gog" visits my
Centre then my Nefyn Welsh comes back along with the accent. Please
keep this site going as I now will be a regular visitor. Phil Hughes

Many interesting photos on your site! Found it through Glenn
McIntosh's site on "Sound of Jura". I am running a site dedicated to
the photographic documentation of whaling and would be thrilled if
we could partner up and parallel post some of these photos on my
site. Fully credited with links back to you of course. Get back to
me at webmaster at paafeltet dot org if you are interested :)

I would like to challenge the assumption that the SS Pyrrhus caught
fire in the Gladstone Dock Nov 1964. I was on my way to join her at
the time and am certain she was berthed on the west side further
south of the Gladstone somewhere near the Canada or Langton Docks.
Perhaps the Liverpool Echo or Post archives will clarify the
location.

Hello,
I have the same post card of the "Mauretania" - the one describing
the "largest vessel afloat". I think the photo is actually the
Lusitania because the air scoops that the Mauritania is famous for
are not evident on the deck. Do you agree?

Many thanks for the report of the sinking of "M. V. Athellaird" on
your web site. my brother Laurie Youens was a petty oficer age 16 on
this ship when she was torpedoed, and spent 10 days in the life boat
before being picked up by a coaster, and landed in Trallee Ireland.
He then spent 12months ashore and then joined the R A F as a
pathfinder navigator on Mosquitoes. He was killed whilst crashing
with a 4000 pounder aboard 23rd August 1944 just 3months before his
21st birthday. Thanks again from his brother now 90 this year. Ted
