Hyn sydd i nodi fod Carroll Hughes bellach wedi gadael y fuchedd hon,
ac fe hoffwn roi hynny ar gof a chadw yma, gan ei fod wedi cyfrannu
yn helaeth i'r safle, ac wedi parhau i garu ei henwlad er iddo orfod
ei gadael, fel y sydd yn wir am gynifer ohonom. Diolch amdano -
Tecwyn Owen (Dolgellau - gynt o Niwbwrch, Môn)
Roedd Carroll yn ffrind annwyl i ni ar rhiw.com ac mae chwithdod
mawr am ei gyfeillgarwch. Bu'n gefn mawr i ni o'r cychwyn cyntaf ac
ni phylodd ei gefnogaeth ar hyd y blynyddoedd ac am hynny rydym yn
fythol ddiolchgar. Tony a Gwenllian

Fascinating site - well done on pulling it all together. My father
sailed with Capt Williams on the Southern King to South Georgia in

Capt Williams when he left, and a photo of my father standing on a

I'm an old sailor of 76 years and nods in recognition of many of the
bars that I remember from 50-60 but missing all the bars in
Katendrich in Rotterdan where the most famous bars were Oceans Bar,
Neutral Bar and not forgetting Valhalla - I also mention Roland Bar
in Valpariso and also Captains Bar and Pilots Bar in Havana before
Castro.

Having sailed in the Aureol from Liverpool in Jan. 1970 bound for
Lagos and at various other times, I was extremely interested in the
article on your web site by someone who had crewed on her. Our
family became very fond of the ship and have been trying to find out
the name of the music that was played each time the ship left port.
It would bring back some very happy memories. Any help in tracing
this would be very much appreciated.
We still have copies of the colorful menus which were provided each
evening.

Used to holiday at Treheli farm in the 70's and 80's. Had great fun
with Gwynfor Jones who worked on the farm and David whose dad was a
gasman and they had a pool table, Can't remember where they lived
but had fun times. If anyone knows if Gwynfor is still in the area

I love the Maritime guestbook the Hughes's were seafarers from Ynys
Mon. Dad was a chief engineer and his father was in deep sea sail. I
was hopeless at maths so couldn't go to sea. Are there any Rhiw blue
funnel men who could verify this story. A resident of Moelfre, told
me that if the skipper of an inward bound blue funnel ship, was from
the village. He would sail closer inland, when they went past.
Family members would also gather on the shore waving sheets, to
their loved ones on the ship. He also said some skippers would sail
between Harry Furlough rock and the mainland. If theses tales are
true, the ships would have been an amazing sight. I know coasting
skippers would rock dodge.

This is a mesage for Tony Jones, I was looking on the Malta website
and noticed that you had allowed some photos of the Substance Convoy
of 1941 to be viewed on the site. My father was on that Convoy and
may well have been on that ship, he was a gunner in the LAA of the
Royal Artillary. Was based in Malta for 3 years following that
convoy. I wondered if you had anymore photos on board the Port
Chalmers ? or on mainlaand Malta? Many thanks, email is:-

Hello there,
I read the poem about "seamens bars round the world" with interest,
nice to see it on the internet, considering I WROTE IT. Have still
got the original in the house in its rough state, before I refined
it. Would like to know where you got it from, as i see you have the
word..."copyright" at the bottom of the poem....Please explain.

Sorry Jim, I can't
remember who sent it to me. So because of the copyright issue I've
just deleted it off the website and my hard drive. Regards Tony

I wonder if you have any information regarding a passenger/cargo
ship named the Dotterel, I have a photograph dated 1911 which shows
a group of crew members aboard a ship of this name, the life boat is
clearly visable the name Cork is also visable, (Cork Ireland I
assume) which is the reason the name is known. This is a bit of a
detective story as one of the entertainments grew named Kate
Gallafent had a liason with the Captain, several photographs taken
over a number of years show this sea capt. only known as "Uncle Tom"
however since he is the captain it should be possible to discover
his full name but I do not know how to search for this inf. Would
you guide me please?

Love your website! I was a shorthand typist in the Garston office of
Elders & Fyffes for over 7 years. I typed all the crew lists,
passenger lists, sailing instructions, etc. I also used to encript
and decript cables - I remember one sad cable we received from the
m.v. ZENT. The Captain had jumped overboard and was lost!! I
discovered your site when I was looking for information on the
Bowater Line. I worked as a secretary to the Terminals
Superintendent on Pier 84 South in Philadelphia and the NICHOLAS
BOWATER used to call with a cargo of newsprint - didn't see a photo
of her though but I remember the "GLADYS" and the 'ELIZABETH".
Captain Campbell of the "NICHOLAS" always invited me and my boss on
board for a meal - a nice treat for me to enjoy British food!! I am
retired now and living in Savannah, Georgia, still enjoying watching
the huge container ships heading up the Savannah River. I visit the
U.K. every year for 3 months - always 2 weeks in Llandudno. Will
visit your site often. Regards, Beryl Nielsen

Hi, Having just read your story about the, Nant Gwythern, I was
surprised to say the least of mention of my grandparents these are
William & Francis Roberts, (iIthink) parents of Margaret (Peggy)born

1913, Ellen Mary Born 1902, Francis Elizabeth Born 1906, James
William born 1903,Anne Olive born 1909, I have heard many stories
from my mother surrounding Nant and how my grandparents moved from
Liverpool to find work in the quarries, then moved to Penmaenmawr to
work in the then Derbyshire quarries,Our records show my
grandparents to be Elizabeth Hind & Evan Rees Roberts and my Great
grandparents were Elen Barbara Brunby Hind and Oliver James William,
both buried in Llithfaen cemetry.

Was a visitor there in 1968 and 1969. Have 2 of the original cards
when Dick Stanford was the manager. I remember the two dark green
cement cones by the door, and the green neon sign on the street
side. Over 40 years, and I have wanted to go back ever since. The
place then was lit only with many candles. One light bulb was in
use, and that was over the cash register. Two guitarists played, and
my nights there were perfect. I can't remember where I went last
week, but I have never forgotten the Waltzing Matilda.

Dear Rhiw .com
I just wanted to say Thank You to you for such a wonderful web site.
My family and I have spent 3 or 4 weeks every year on holiday and
sailing in Nefyn for the last 45 years. The Llyn peninsular has
meant so much to us. We stayed for many years with Miss Anne
Williams of Gwynfryn Nefyn, whose Father was a sea captain, she was
Ladies Golf Captain at the Nefyn Golf Club. We now stay with Rob and
Wenna Williams at Porth Dinllaen Farm.
We live in Sheffield which is far from the sea, but am a keen sailor
(sailing craft)
I recently gave a talk to our Sheffield Model Engineering Club (http://www.sheffieldsmee.co.uk/)
on the history of boats and your web site was a very useful and
fascinating resource.
Thank you.
