Hello and how’s little old Wales by now!
I’m still here in Selden with not much to
do really the machines are all ready for the harvest, and yes I
did manage to pass my driving test ( THANK GOD !!!!!!) I expect
you’re all thinking that I’m sweltering here in the hot
sunshine….. well 60% of the time I am, but last week to my great
amazement we had snow !!! yes that’s right snow. It was last
Thursday despite being boiling hot on Wednesday everywhere was
white on Thursday morning and it hasn’t been hot since, well that
is up until today!!! One thing I’ve noticed in the last couple of
weeks is that the crews who come to work here each year are really
made to feel welcome by the local people for example if you’re on
the roadside doing something everyone waves and says Hi how’re you
doing!! Folk round here don’t bother much about locking car doors,
quite often you’ll see a 4 x 4 with the engine running and the
owner either shopping or in the bar!! Back home it would have gone
before you turned your back!!! Another thing I’ve noticed about
cars here is MOT’s don’t exist, the only thing you need is a
driving licence and insurance, it doesn’t matter if it’s falling
apart as long as the tyres aren’t as bald as a coot, and of course
you can’t drive under the influence of alcohol. You don’t need to
wear a seat belt ( well you won’t get stopped for not wearing one
!!! ).
Well I’m off now I hope I’ll have some
photographs for you soon, so that you can see the luxury caravan I
sleep in!!!!!!! And of course some of the machinery we’ll be
driving down to Vernon Texas at the end of the month. I’ll be
thinking of you all whilst I tuck in to the huge BBQ they’ve laid
on for me for supper tonight!!!!!!
If you would like to contact me directly
you’re welcome to e.mail me at

Brief history
of
Selden
Selden, Kansas came
into being in 1888, just after the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific
railroad was built through the county. Families and buildings were moved
here from old Sheridan, Shibboleth and Jackson to be at the railroad.
The town company platted a town which was named in honor of Selden G.
Hopkins who, with I. B. Gray, I. N. Pence, M. F. Vandiver, Charles
Chandler and Joe Jenkins made up the town company. Bonds of $12,000 were
voted for a town site and on June 6, 1888, the McCroskie homestead was
purchased for this purpose.
A post office was
granted with I. N. Pence, postmaster. E. C. Motz, who had been
postmaster at Old Sheridan, carried mail on the star routes.
